En Garde – How Pilates Fencing transformed my Tierce!
Professor Duncan Sayer tells us how Pilates helped develop his Sabre Fencing technique, allowing him to compete at national level.
Pilates has changed my relationship with my body. Since beginning mat classes it has helped to elevate my sport experience from interested amateur to national level competition, and even helped me to achieve a top 80 UK ranking in the fast and furious world of men’s sabre fencing. It has increased my flexibility enormously, and most importantly it has put me in charge of strength training, post sport recovery and speedy injury management.
For me the Tower classes took this experience to another level again because the springs really make you think about your technique, and about how the whole of your body connects and moves. Pilates fencing benefits include that it has helped me to develop core strength, which is vital for mobility and flexibility.
Pilates Works is a beautifully equipped studio making it an excellent training resource. Sophie is the best Pilates teacher I have ever had; she keeps strictly to Joseph Pilates vision, and keeps detailed notes and really pays attention to individual progress in a safe and professional manner.
