Pilates for beginners at home: Simple guide

Pilates for beginners at home

Being a beginner in anything can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be.  We have created a Pilates for beginners at home simple guide to help you get started. First of all, we thought we’d briefly cover what Pilates actually is, then we will talk you step by step through all the elements you may want to know about pilates such as what to wear, what equipment you might need, whether you have the ability to do Pilates and what happens in a Pilates class.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that is low impact and has less of a risk of injury than any other form of exercise. Pilates, similarly to yoga, has a focus on improving your strength, predominantly around your core area, as well as developing your flexibility and balance. It was originally invented by Joseph Pilates who created this form of exercise for injured dancers and soldiers. He opened his first studio in New York in the 1920’s. Pilates Works still apply the original works of Joseph Pilates because we feel that these classical movements are most effective.

What are the benefits of Pilates for beginners at home?

‘In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you you’ll see the difference and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body’ Joseph Pilates (1883-1967)

Can anyone do Pilates?

So, as a first timer you may be wondering, can anyone do Pilates? The answer is, yes pretty much! Pilates is low impact and non strenuous, so unless you have been directed by your doctor not to, Pilates is suitable for almost everyone. The slow, graceful movements make this form of exercise possible for anyone, regardless of age, ability or fitness level.

All of our classes both online and in studio are available in three different ability levels, which start with beginner moving up to intermediate and for those experienced in pilates we provide advanced classes.

How to get started with Pilates for beginners at home?

To get started, it is important to choose an appropriate area where you will have sufficient space and will be undisturbed so you can fully immerse yourself in your pilates session. Be sure you have enough space by stretching out your entire body including extending your arms and legs as far as possible. If you can do this then you are on your way to your first pilates session. We recommend a quiet location with minimal distractions as we feel it is crucial to connect your mind and body to achieve the optimum results. Start to practise simple stretch movements and mindful breathing to start learning the way in which your body works.

What equipment do I need?

Do not worry if you don’t have any equipment, all Pilates requires is a flat surface, adequate space and ideally a mat or even a rug will suffice. Pilates for beginners at home is not going to require equipment, as after all you are just getting started. It is important to get to grips with your own body before adding equipment into the mix.

Once you feel more comfortable, if you do want to attend one of our studio classes we can support you through the integration process of pilates equipment. We use top of the range equipment that includes reformer 1.1 classes, wall tower classes and much more.

What happens in an online Pilates class?

We can’t speak for anyone else, but we provide on demand classes which you can access on your own any time. However we recommend joining in with our live online classes for the best experience and results. We provide 1.1 classes or small group sessions perfect for any level of ability. Our classes are up to an hour long and include a thorough warm up and cool down stretch as well as a guided session. The benefits of our live online classes are that we talk you through each movement, we can show you exactly what to do, what form you should take and can help you to improve your form if it is slightly off to ensure you achieve the desired results.

What to wear to do Pilates?

Knowing what to wear for any occasion can be a stressful experience, at least it is for me anyway. So if you are unsure on what to wear to your first Pilates class, we recommend leggings preferably because shorts can rise up during the movements making the Pilates moves difficult or uncomfortable. The main thing is to remember to wear something you will be cool and comfortable in that enables you to complete the necessary movements. Footwear wise, we suggest either doing Pilates barefoot or in socks in order to achieve proper foot alignment.

We hope that this simple guide has helped to alleviate any concerns you may have of pilates for beginners at home. If you are interested in taking a leap into your Pilates journey, do not hesitate to contact us for any advice or book your first online session with us.
